Kinnaur, Lahaul & Spiti, Chamba Top Himachal Climate Resilience Rankings
Imagine some places in the mountains are like sturdy little houses that don't get bothered much by storms, while other places, like busy towns, are more exposed when a big storm comes.
A new report looked at how well different areas in Himachal Pradesh, India, can handle climate change.
It found that remote places like Kinnaur and Lahaul & Spiti, even though they might not have as many fancy roads or hospitals, are tougher against climate risks like floods or heat.
This is because they are less crowded and have fewer big buildings.
Other places that are more like big towns, with more development, have higher scores for climate risks, meaning storms and changes in weather could affect them more.
So, even though these developed places might seem richer, they need to be extra careful about climate change.
Kinnaur, Lahaul & Spiti, and Chamba in Himachal Pradesh are the most resilient to climate risks, topping the Climate-Adjusted Human Development Index (CAHDI).
These remote districts have lower Hazard Index values, indicating less vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters.
Urbanized and economically advanced districts like Solan and Shimla, despite higher HDI, ranked lower on CAHDI due to high exposure to climate risks.
The CAHDI penalizes districts with greater environmental risks, providing a more realistic view of long-term development.
Gaps in health infrastructure, limited medical facilities, and poor connectivity were noted in the top-ranking districts.
