Navapur Poultry Farmers Await ₹8 Crore Compensation After Bird Flu
In Navapur, a town in Maharashtra, many people raise chickens for a living.
In 2021, a dangerous bird flu hit the area, and the chickens had to be killed to stop the disease.
The farmers were promised money to replace their lost chickens.
Even after three months, the money has not arrived because the state is still waiting for the national government to give its part of the funds.
Without the money, the farmers cannot get rid of the sick chickens in nearby villages.
The state says it has finished all paperwork and will pay the farmers as soon as the money comes.
The farmers have written many letters to the state to ask for the money.
Hundreds of Navapur poultry farmers are still waiting for compensation after a bird flu outbreak.
The state claims it has completed all paperwork and is awaiting the Centre’s share of ₹8 crore.
The delay has stalled the culling of about 10,000 backyard birds in surrounding villages.
District Deputy Commissioner Dr Sanjay Khachane said compensation will be transferred immediately once funds are released.
Farmers have repeatedly written to the state, citing the quick release of funds during the 2021 outbreak.
