TMC MP Seeks UN Action Over Kolkata Colony Water Crisis

People in Jyoti Nagar Colony in Kolkata have reportedly faced a long interruption in drinking-water supplies.

Trinamool Congress MP Samirul Islam wrote to the United Nations’ human-rights chief about the situation.

He said the residents are Muslim and alleged that their religious identity is connected to the water disruption.

The reports do not include a response from the authorities to that allegation.

Islam said clean drinking water is a basic human right, not a special favor.

He warned that going without enough water could make people sick, especially those who are poor.

He asked UN human-rights bodies to look into the issue and ask local authorities why the supply has not been restored regularly.
