Guntur Assault Case Sparks Political Controversy
In Andhra Pradesh, a woman was hurt and treated very badly during a fight about water.
The Home Minister, Vangalapudi Anita, is very upset and talked to the local police chief.
She found out that the people who did this were being punished.
She also asked why the police officer in charge didn't act quickly and said that no one, no matter who they are, will be allowed to hurt women.
The Chief Minister and another minister also said that this is not acceptable and that the law will be enforced fairly.
The people who did this have been arrested, and one of them, who is part of a political group, has been suspended from that group.
However, the opposition party, YSRCP, says the government knew about the incident earlier but tried to hide it.
They also say the police did not act quickly until there was public outrage.
A woman was stripped and assaulted during a dispute over a drinking water motor connection in Guntur on July 15.
The incident involved 21st Division TDP secretary Mallela Venkataramana Murthy and his family members, including a transgender person identified as Madhavi.
The victim lodged a complaint on July 16, leading to the registration of a case against nine persons, including Murthy.
Home Minister Vangalapudi Anita took serious note of the incident and ordered action against negligent police personnel, warning of strict action against offenders regardless of their status or political affiliations.
YSRCP leaders accused the TDP-led government of attempting to suppress the case and protect its leaders, alleging police inaction and political patronage.
