India-EU Trade Deal Nears Completion
India and the European Union are very close to finishing a big trade deal.
This deal is expected to be signed on January 27, 2026.
The leaders of the EU, Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa, are visiting India for the Republic Day celebrations and to finalize this agreement.
The deal is important because it will make it easier and cheaper to trade goods between India and the EU.
India exports a lot of things to the EU, like cotton textiles and smartphones.
The cotton textiles industry in India wants the EU to remove tariffs, which are like extra taxes on their products.
This would make Indian cotton textiles more competitive in the EU market.
The deal is also expected to help India reach its goal of exporting $40 billion worth of apparel by 2030.
Overall, this trade deal is a big step to strengthen the economic relationship between India and the EU.
India and the EU are finalizing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected to be signed on January 27, 2026.
EU leaders Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa are in India for Republic Day celebrations and to conclude the FTA.
The FTA is anticipated to boost India's exports, particularly in sectors like cotton textiles and smartphones.
The Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council is pushing for zero-duty access for Indian cotton textiles in the EU market.
India's merchandise exports grew by 1.9% year-on-year in December 2025, with the US remaining the top export destination.
