India Sees Rise in Patent Filings, But Commercialization a Challenge
India is seeing a big increase in the number of people applying for patents, like ideas for new inventions.
In the last year, the number of Indian citizens applying for patents has jumped by about 32%.
Other things like trademarks (names or logos) and designs are also growing.
Experts say this is good news, but it's still early days.
Getting these ideas from paper to actual products people can buy is the next challenge, meaning turning the filings into market ready products.
India is working on making it faster to get patents approved and this will help more innovation.
India saw a 32.19% rise in patent applications filed by Indian citizens in FY25, reaching 68,176.
Trademark applications also increased from 4.18 lakh in FY21 to over 5.38 lakh in FY25.
Design filings surged from 10,594 to 38,804 during the same period.
Experts caution that turning filings into market-ready products remains a work-in-progress.
Pendency in the patent system has dropped sharply from 2,160 days to just 120.
