President Withholds Assent to Bengal Bills
The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has decided not to approve two new laws made by the West Bengal government.
These laws wanted to change who is in charge of universities in the state.
Right now, the governor is the chancellor of these universities.
The new laws wanted to make the chief minister the chancellor instead.
But the President said no to these changes.
So, the governor will continue to be the chancellor as before.
This decision is part of a bigger discussion about how much power the governor should have in running the universities.
President Droupadi Murmu withheld assent to two bills passed by the West Bengal government.
The bills aimed to replace the governor with the chief minister as chancellor of state-aided universities.
Governor CV Ananda Bose will continue to serve as the chancellor.
The bills were passed in June 2024 and reserved for presidential consideration in April 2024.
