Syria Recognizes Kurdish Rights Amid Military Tensions
The president of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa, made a big announcement.
He said that Kurdish people in Syria can now be official citizens and that their language, Kurdish, is now an official language of the country, just like Arabic.
This is a big change because before, many Kurds didn't have citizenship and couldn't use their language in schools.
The president also said that a festival called Nowruz, which is like a New Year celebration, is now a national holiday.
But at the same time, the Syrian army is taking control of areas that were run by Kurdish forces for a long time.
There have been fights between the army and the Kurds, and some people are worried that the government is not really giving the Kurds the rights they want.
The United States and other countries are trying to help stop the fighting.
Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa issued a decree recognizing Kurdish identity and language rights, making Kurdish an official national language alongside Arabic.
The decree restores citizenship to all Kurdish Syrians, including those previously stateless, and recognizes Nowruz as a paid national holiday.
The Syrian army has taken control of several areas in the north, dislodging Kurdish forces from territory they had controlled for over a decade.
Clashes between the Syrian army and Kurdish forces have resulted in casualties and displaced residents, with both sides accusing each other of violating withdrawal deals.
Kurdish authorities view the decree as a first step but express dissatisfaction, calling for constitutional recognition of their rights and self-governance.
