Root is also close to passing Ricky Ponting’s record for home-Test runs.
He could also match Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most Test half-centuries.

Root needed 42 runs and added the required five after ending Day 1 unbeaten on 37.
Root is also pursuing Ricky Ponting’s record of 7,578 runs in home Tests, needing 37 more runs to surpass it.
With 67 Test half-centuries, Root could equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 68 if he scores a fifty in the first innings.
