Sitharaman Warns of Weaponized Trade
At the India Economic Conclave 2025 in New Delhi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman talked about how global trade is becoming unfair.
She said that countries are using tariffs and other measures to protect themselves, which makes trade not free or fair.
India is trying to protect its own industries from being overwhelmed by cheap imports.
The minister also mentioned that some countries criticize others for using tariffs, but they do the same without being questioned.
This is important because high tariffs by countries like the US and Mexico are making global trade more difficult.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman warned that global trade is increasingly weaponized through tariffs and other measures.
She emphasized that India must carefully navigate these challenges to protect its economic interests.
Sitharaman noted that trade is no longer free and fair, with some countries imposing tariffs without criticism.
India's strategy involves safeguarding domestic industries against predatory practices.
