Kanwar Yatra 2026: Oversized DJ Vehicles, Traffic Jams Trigger Concerns
The Kanwar Yatra is a very big yearly walk that lots of people in India do to collect holy water.
It is one of the biggest religious journeys in India, with millions of people taking part.
In 2026, the huge crowds caused big traffic jams in Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh.
Videos on the internet showed very long lines of cars and very large music trucks, called DJ vehicles, blocking the roads.
Some of the music trucks were too big and too loud, so police stopped them.
In one city, police gave the truck driver a fine of 50,000 rupees.
People were also sitting on top of the truck, near power lines, which was dangerous.
Police made the trucks follow the rules before letting them continue.
Some schools closed for a few days so children would be safe.
Police and town leaders worked together to help the pilgrims walk while also keeping other people safe.
Viral videos show long vehicle queues, oversized DJ vehicles and loud music disrupting traffic across Delhi-NCR and western Uttar Pradesh during the Kanwar Yatra.
A widely shared video from Ghaziabad's Meerut Tiraha near the NH-9 Link Road shows massive traffic snarls after diversions were introduced.
Muzaffarnagar Police intercepted a DJ vehicle for exceeding permitted dimensions and sound levels and issued a ₹50,000 challan to its operator.
Several people were found sitting on top of the DJ structure, creating a safety hazard due to overhead power lines and other obstacles.
Authorities imposed traffic restrictions, converted roads into one-way corridors and temporarily closed schools in several western Uttar Pradesh districts during peak yatra days.
