Kerala’s 24X7 Specialist Care Plan Faces Staffing Test

Kerala’s 24X7 Specialist Care Plan Faces Staffing Test

Kerala wants district and general hospitals to provide specialist care all day and all night.

The plan would include areas such as medicine, surgery, children’s care and women’s care.

The government hopes this will bring treatment closer to people and reduce pressure on medical colleges.

Doctors agree that this is a useful goal.

However, they say many hospitals do not have enough specialists to work safely around the clock.

Some departments have only three or four specialists.

Doctors worry that the same people could work overnight and then continue with daytime duties.

They want the government to hire more doctors, create new posts and improve emergency departments before starting the plan.

They also warn that moving doctors from primary health centres could leave rural communities without basic care.
