India-Bangladesh Reset Hinges on Extradition, Borders and Water

India-Bangladesh Reset Hinges on Extradition, Borders and Water

India and Bangladesh are trying to improve their relationship, but several disagreements are making that difficult.

Indian envoy Dinesh Trivedi met Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in August.

Rahman asked India to speed up the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

India said her request is still being considered through legal procedures.

Bangladesh also wants progress on borders, water sharing, trade and other issues.

India has restarted tourist-visa processing, helping patients, students and businesses travel again.

The two countries are also discussing whether a cricket tour should take place.

Trivedi can help the countries talk, but their governments must make the major decisions.

The future of the relationship may depend on whether those decisions produce practical results.
