India Bans Websites, OTT Platforms for Obscene Content
The Indian government has taken action against several websites and streaming platforms, including Ullu and ALTT, by banning them.
This decision was made because these platforms were showing content that was considered inappropriate, such as sexually explicit scenes and vulgarity, which goes against Indian laws.
Kanchan Gupta from the MIB explained that the content often lacked a storyline and focused on vulgarity.
The government is also working on more detailed rules for streaming content online.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) had previously raised concerns about the content on these platforms.
The Indian government has banned 26 websites and 14 OTT platforms for hosting obscene content.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) directed ISPs to disable access to the platforms.
Kanchan Gupta, MIB Senior Advisor, stated the content lacked storylines and focused on vulgarity.
The content included sexual innuendos, nudity, and explicit scenes, violating Indian law.
The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) flagged the platforms in July-August 2024.
