Centre Proposes Cashless Settlement in BBMB Share Dispute
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) is a big water‑and‑power project that shares electricity with several Indian states.
Himachal Pradesh has not received its share of electricity and money since 1966.
The Indian government suggested that Punjab and Haryana give Himachal the missing electricity instead of paying cash.
Punjab does not agree with the plan and says the rate is too high.
The Supreme Court asked Punjab to decide in two weeks, and a new hearing is set for August 12.
Supreme Court considered Centre's cashless settlement proposal for Himachal’s arrears from BBMB projects.
Himachal is owed 13,066 million units of electricity, roughly Rs 4,200 crore, since 1966.
Punjab and Haryana would pay Himachal in energy units, not cash, per the proposal.
Punjab objected to the proposal, citing a high arrears rate of Rs 2.5 per unit.
Court gave Punjab two weeks to respond; hearing scheduled for Aug 12.
