Mumbai Lakes Overflow, Yet City Faces Water Shortage

Mumbai Lakes Overflow, Yet City Faces Water Shortage

Mumbai needs a lot of water every day, about 4,665 million litres.

Its reservoirs can only give 4,100 million litres, so the city is short by 565 million litres.

Even though the lakes are full now, the city still has a problem because it depends on rain that can be unpredictable.

The city’s water pipes are old and leak a lot, losing about 900 million litres a day.

To fix this, the city is building a big plant in Manori that will turn sea water into drinking water, costing over 4,000 crore rupees.

The plant will start with 200 million litres a day and could grow to 400 million litres.

The city also plans a tunnel to bring that water to the city.

Experts say that by 2041, Mumbai could need 6,424 million litres more than it can get, so the city is trying to add new ways to get water.
