Kavach 4.0 Commissioned on 2,569 km Delhi‑Mumbai, Delhi‑Howrah Routes
Indian Railways has just finished installing a new safety system called Kavach 4.0 on 2,569 kilometres of track between Delhi and Mumbai, and Delhi and Howrah.
Kavach automatically stops a train if the driver forgets to slow down, and it works even in bad weather.
The system was tested a lot before being put into use.
The government spent about 3,874 crore rupees on the project so far, and will spend another 2,066 crore next year.
Because of Kavach and other safety work, train accidents have dropped a lot – from 135 in 2014‑15 to just 16 in 2025‑26, and only two accidents so far this year.
The number of accidents per million train‑kilometres also fell from 0.11 to 0.01.
This shows that the new safety system is helping keep trains and passengers safer.
Kavach 4.0, an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system, commissioned on 2,569 route kilometres covering Delhi‑Mumbai and Delhi‑Howrah high‑density routes.
The system provides automatic braking, improved location accuracy, signal aspect information, and interfaces with existing electronic interlocking.
Funding up to June 2026 totals Rs 3,874 crore, with Rs 2,066 crore allocated for 2026‑27.
Indian Railways reports an 88% drop in train accidents, with only 16 incidents in 2025‑26 and two up to June.
The Consequential Accident Index fell to 0.01 per million train‑kilometres, a 91% reduction from 0.11 in 2014‑15.
