London Study Shows Traffic Cuts Improve Children’s Lung Health

London created a special zone to reduce pollution from vehicles.

Researchers studied 3,414 children between six and nine years old.

Some children lived in London, while others lived in Luton, about 56 kilometres away.

Before the zone began, London children’s lungs were growing more slowly on average.

After the zone started, pollution from nitrogen dioxide fell.

London children’s lung function then improved faster than that of children in Luton.

Four years later, their lung function was similar.

The researchers said other countries could consider similar clean-air measures to protect children’s lungs.
