RBI Raises Telangana's WMA Limit to Rs 2,407 Crore
The Reserve Bank of India has increased the temporary loan limit, called Ways and Means Advance (WMA), for the Telangana government to Rs 2,407 crore.
This change helps Telangana manage its short-term money needs better.
WMAs are like short-term loans that governments can take to cover immediate expenses when their income and spending don't match up.
The RBI offers these loans to help governments keep essential services running smoothly.
Telangana's WMA limit has grown a lot over the years, showing that the state needs more financial support to handle its money flow.
However, there are concerns about Telangana's increasing reliance on these loans, as it used WMA for almost the entire financial year in 2023-24, even though it had a revenue surplus.
The RBI increased Telangana's WMA limit to Rs 2,407 crore from Rs 2,300 crore.
The aggregate WMA ceiling for all states was revised to Rs 61,008 crore.
WMAs are temporary loans to help governments manage short-term liquidity constraints.
Telangana's WMA limit has grown significantly from Rs 550 crore in 2014 to Rs 2,407 crore in 2026.
The CAG raised concerns about Telangana's high reliance on WMA, with usage extending to 349 days in 2023-24.
