Assam Expels 19 Illegal Immigrants to Bangladesh
The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced that 19 people who were living in Assam without proper documents were caught and sent back to Bangladesh.
The government is using a law from 1950 to send these people back more quickly.
Before, special courts had to decide these cases, but now district officials can make the decision.
The government says this is to protect the state from illegal immigrants and preserve the rights of the indigenous people.
However, some people are worried that this law might be used to target minorities unfairly.
The government is also closely watching the situation in Bangladesh due to recent violence and concerns about regional security.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that 19 undocumented migrants were apprehended and sent back to Bangladesh.
The migrants were from Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts in Assam.
The expulsion was carried out under the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, which allows district officials to bypass foreigners tribunals.
Sarma claimed that about 35 to 40 'illegal' immigrants are being 'pushed back' every week.
The Assam Cabinet approved a standard operating procedure in September to use the 1950 Act, reducing the role of foreigners tribunals.
