SC seeks Maharashtra's response on teacher post criteria plea
The Supreme Court has asked the Maharashtra government to respond to a complaint about a new rule that changes how teacher jobs are given in schools.
The rule, made in March 2024, decides the number of teachers based on the total number of students in primary, upper primary, and secondary schools, instead of looking at each class separately.
The people who complained say this rule goes against the Right to Education Act, which says there should be enough teachers for each class.
They are worried that schools with fewer students might have to close because of this new rule.
The Supreme Court is now looking into this issue.
The Supreme Court issued a notice to Maharashtra on a plea challenging the March 2024 Government Resolution (GR) that modified teacher post criteria.
The GR changes the pupil-teacher ratio measurement from class-wise to section-wise (primary, upper primary, secondary).
The plea claims the GR is contrary to the Right to Education Act, 2009, and could lead to the closure of schools with fewer students.
The bench of Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe sought Maharashtra's response on the plea.
The plea was filed by Sindhudurg Zilla Shikshan Sanstha Chalak Mandal through advocate Ajit Pravin Wagh.
