Gurgaon Pitches Underground Wells and Tanks to Fight Flooding

Gurugram often floods when heavy rain falls very quickly.

The city wants to build underground wells and tanks to move rainwater away from roads.

The tanks would collect water, and the wells would send filtered water deeper underground.

Officials hope to install the system at four especially bad flooding locations first.

They want the system to handle three times the amount of rain expected during the heaviest storms.

A monitoring network would track how much water goes underground.

Some experts support the idea if it is properly designed, funded and monitored.

Other experts say the city must also clear blocked drains, protect ponds and reduce the effects of too much concrete.

They warn that underground technology alone may not solve the flooding problem.
