World Bank Executive Director Rejects Claim India Grew 2.6%

India recently reported that its economy grew 7.8% in the first quarter of the fiscal year.

Former finance secretary S C Garg said the growth might really have been only 2.6%.

He based this argument on a change to the GDP numbers used for comparison.

World Bank Executive Director Neelkanth Mishra strongly rejected that claim.

Mishra said the newer GDP series uses better methods and cleaner data.

He also pointed to strong sales of cars, two-wheelers and commercial vehicles.

Tax collections and bank lending have also been improving, according to Mishra.

The disagreement is about whether the reported growth rate correctly reflects India’s economic performance.
