Tree of Heaven Uses Chemicals to Dominate Disturbed Landscapes
The Tree of Heaven is a tree with a beautiful-sounding name.
But it can be a very strong competitor.
Its roots release chemicals into the soil.
These chemicals can make it harder for nearby plants to grow.
Its fallen leaves can release similar chemicals.
The tree also grows quickly.
Its roots spread widely underground.
Together, these traits can help it take over disturbed areas.
Tree of Heaven is scientifically known as Ailanthus altissima.
Despite its name, the tree can be a formidable competitor.
Its roots release chemicals that can suppress neighboring plants.
Chemicals from its fallen leaves can also hinder nearby plant growth.
Rapid growth and an extensive root system help it dominate disturbed landscapes.
