Andhra Pradesh Sanctuaries Struggle to Protect Wildlife
Imagine two special parks in Andhra Pradesh, India, meant to protect rare birds.
Sadly, one park, Rollapadu, no longer has the Great Indian bustard, a very rare bird.
The other park, Lankamalleswara, is supposed to have another rare bird, the Jerdon's courser, but no one has seen it recently, even though there is evidence it is there.
Scientists are worried and suggest to re-check and if the bird is there to start programs to help save these birds.
One of the parks also has a growing population of black bucks which is creating issues with the local farmers.
Two wildlife sanctuaries in Andhra Pradesh may no longer house the species they were created to protect.
The Rollapadu sanctuary no longer has the Great Indian bustard, a highly endangered species.
The Lankamalleswara sanctuary is believed to house the critically endangered Jerdon’s courser, though recent sightings are lacking.
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) reported the Great Indian bustard population in Rollapadu has declined significantly.
WII suggests re-assessing the presence of Jerdon’s courser and considering captive breeding programs for its revival.
