Mumbai Jewish Community Welcomes Hebrew New Year 5787

Mumbai’s Jewish community celebrated its New Year, called Rosh Hashanah.

This celebration marked the beginning of Hebrew year 5787.

The year officially began at sundown on September 11.

Because that day was the Sabbath, people held the shofar ceremony on Sunday instead.

The shofar is a horn made from a sheep’s horn.

It was blown 101 times during the ceremony.

The sound reminds people to think about their actions and reconnect with God.

Rosh Hashanah begins ten special days of prayer and reflection that end with Yom Kippur.
