Moderna shares surge as melanoma vaccine data sparks rally

Moderna shares surge as melanoma vaccine data sparks rally

Moderna makes vaccines and other medicines using a technology called mRNA.

Its stock price jumped sharply after it announced encouraging results for a melanoma treatment.

The treatment combines Moderna’s personalized vaccine with Merck’s KEYTRUDA medicine.

In a study, the combination helped high-risk melanoma patients stay free of cancer returning or spreading.

This was the first successful Phase 3 result for an individualized mRNA cancer treatment, according to the companies.

Merck’s stock also rose after the announcement.

Moderna’s business results were less dramatic, with only slightly higher revenue and a large loss in the latest quarter.

Investors were especially excited about the possible future of the cancer treatment, but the companies still need to share the data with regulators.
