Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Break the Cage’ Call Draws BJP Criticism
Rahul Gandhi spoke to young women at an event in Pune.
He said women are one of India’s biggest strengths.
He asked women to become independent and not be defined only as daughters, wives, mothers or sisters.
He criticized ideas he associated with Manusmriti.
He called his message “Break the Cage.”
BJP leader Amit Malviya said the message seemed selective.
He asked whether Gandhi would apply the same ideas to women from every religious community.
Another BJP leader, Nishikant Dubey, told Gandhi to read and understand Manusmriti.
Rahul Gandhi told young women in Pune that India’s women are its greatest strength and urged them to reject patriarchal restrictions.
At the ‘Pinjra Toda’ event, Gandhi criticized interpretations of Manusmriti that define women through their relationships with fathers, husbands and sons.
Gandhi described Manusmriti as an alleged restrictive text associated with the RSS and called for women to assert independent identities.
BJP leader Amit Malviya linked the slogan to the earlier ‘Pinjra Tod’ campaign and questioned whether Gandhi’s approach applied equally across communities.
Malviya demanded that Gandhi address issues including the hijab, polygamy, halala, a Uniform Civil Code and women’s legislative representation.
