US Lawmaker Criticizes Purdue University Over H-1B Hiring

A lawmaker in the US is upset because Purdue University, which is paid for by taxpayers, hired a foreign person to teach marketing using an H-1B visa.

The lawmaker, Andrew Ireland, asked if there are no Americans who can do this job for $127,500 a year.

Purdue also has a program where students can get a PhD in marketing.

Some people agreed with the lawmaker, saying that H-1B visas should only be used for jobs that Americans can't or won't do.

Others disagreed, saying that universities should hire the best person for the job, no matter where they are from.

Purdue and another university, Indiana University, have also hired people for data science and software engineering roles using H-1B visas.

The US government is changing the way it gives out H-1B visas, making it based on how much the job pays, starting from February 27, 2026.

There is also a new fee of $100,000 for some new H-1B visa applications filed after September.
