Government Tightens Enforcement of India's Existing Nine-SIM Limit
The government has told phone companies to stop giving people more SIM cards than allowed.
In most of India, one person can have up to nine mobile connections.
The limit is six connections in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North-East.
This limit has existed since 2012, but the government now wants it enforced more strictly.
Starting August 24, 2026, phone companies must check whether customers have reached the limit.
Customers must list all the phone connections registered in their name, even if they use different companies.
The Digital Intelligence Platform will help companies check this information.
A connection issued beyond the limit may be suspended until the matter is resolved.
The Department of Telecommunications directed telecom operators to deny new connections to subscribers who have reached the permitted SIM limit.
The existing limit is nine mobile connections nationwide and six in Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, and the North-East.
Operators must begin technical and organisational enforcement measures from August 24, 2026.
Customers must declare all mobile connections held in their name across operators and licensed service areas.
The Digital Intelligence Platform will help identify subscribers at or above the limit, with operators expected to streamline integration by November 30.
