World Rabies Day 2026 Urges Collective Action Against Deadly Disease

Rabies is a dangerous disease that can spread from infected animals to people.

Dogs cause most human rabies cases.

The disease can enter the body through a bite, scratch or saliva touching broken skin.

People should not wait for symptoms after a risky animal exposure.

They should wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes.

They should then get medical help as soon as possible.

Doctors may recommend rabies vaccine and other treatment called post-exposure prophylaxis.

Vaccinating dogs and avoiding unfamiliar animals can help prevent rabies.

The 2026 World Rabies Day theme says that people and animal-care workers must work together to stop the disease.
