Karnataka Cabinet Snub Sparks Protests, Council Resignations in Gadag
There is a big political party in India called Congress, and it runs the state of Karnataka.
Leaders in the party are chosen to be ministers in the state government's cabinet.
Recently, three senior leaders were not chosen, and their supporters became very upset.
The leaders are named H K Patil, N A Haris, and H C Mahadevappa.
In the city of Gadag, many city council members quit their jobs to show support for H K Patil.
Different reports say different numbers quit — some say 19 and some say 22.
In the big city of Bengaluru, hundreds of people protested, and police held about 20 people for a while.
Some protesters said the government should pay more attention to the North Karnataka area.
One supporter even promised not to wear a shirt until H K Patil becomes a minister.
The supporters want the Congress leaders to give these senior people a place in the cabinet.
Senior Congress leader and Gadag MLA H K Patil, along with N A Haris and H C Mahadevappa, was left out of the Karnataka Cabinet expansion.
Gadag-Betageri City Municipal Council members resigned in solidarity, with one report saying 19 (15 elected, 4 nominated) and another saying 22 (17 elected on Congress tickets).
Hundreds of N A Haris supporters protested in Bengaluru near the War Memorial on Brigade Road, and about 20 were taken into preventive custody.
Congress leaders and office-bearers of the T Narasipura constituency submitted collective resignations after H C Mahadevappa was not given a ministerial post.
Protesters demanded greater representation for North Karnataka, with some warning the neglect could lead to a demand for a separate North Karnataka state.
