India Sees 32% Rise in Patent Filings in FY25, Upward Trend
India is seeing a big jump in the number of patents filed by its citizens, increasing by 32% in the latest year.
This means more people are coming up with new ideas and inventions.
This growth is due to a supportive environment, encouragement from industries and government programs.
But, it is not enough to have a patent, the challenge is to get these ideas into the market to sell them.
Although India is doing well in terms of number of filings, experts say that India still lags behind in international patent filings as compared to China, USA and Japan.
Also, India has also improved in processing times for patent applications, making it faster for inventors.
India's patent filings by citizens increased 32.19% in FY25, reaching 68,176.
Over five years, patent filings have nearly tripled, with significant growth also seen in trademarks, designs, copyright, and GI filings.
Experts suggest the surge is driven by a favorable business environment and government initiatives.
While encouraging, successful commercialization of these patents remains a challenge.
The patent pendency time has dropped from 2,160 days to just 120 days.
