Expedition Launched to Assess Glacial Lake Flood Risks in Sikkim
Scientists are working together in Sikkim to study lakes that could cause big floods from melting glaciers.
They're going to study six high-risk lakes and use special tools to learn more about them.
Their mission, which started on August 20 and ends on September 10, is to check how dangerous these lakes are.
They hope to protect communities from future floods by finding out what could go wrong, so they can make safety plans and give people a warning before a flood happens.
It's important because a glacier caused a big flood in the area in 2023.
A GLOF expedition was launched in Sikkim's Mangan district, involving experts from various institutes.
The expedition, from August 20 to September 10, aims to assess risks from six high-risk glacial lakes.
Experts are using advanced technologies for hazard assessment and early warning systems.
The team is monitoring glaciers, including Khangpup Khangse, which caused a flood in June.
The study will inform mitigation plans to protect downstream communities from future disasters.
