Model Youth Gram Sabha Initiative Launched to Foster Grassroots Democracy
Imagine a special game for students in India called the Model Youth Gram Sabha.
It's like a pretend village meeting where students from 9th to 12th grade get to act like the village leaders, like the sarpanch and other officials.
They'll have mock meetings, talk about real village problems, and even plan pretend budgets and development projects.
This helps them learn how the local government, called Panchayati Raj, works in a hands-on way.
It's also a way to teach them about being good citizens and leaders.
The program is starting in many special schools across the country, and there are even prizes for the schools that do the best.
This initiative is inspired by similar programs like Model UN, where students learn about global decision-making.
The Model Youth Gram Sabha (MYGS) initiative was launched on October 30, 2025, by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
Students from classes 9-12 will role-play as village officials in mock Gram Sabha meetings, discussing issues and creating village budgets and development plans.
The initiative aims to provide students with practical experience in grassroots democracy, fostering leadership and civic engagement.
It aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 by promoting constitutional values and active citizenship among students.
The first phase will involve over 600 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and 200 Eklavya Model Residential Schools, with competitions and prize money for participating schools.
