Vasai's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Faces Delays, Low Completion Rate
Imagine a special government program called PMAY that helps poor people build their own houses.
In a place called Vasai, the government approved over a thousand houses to be built this year.
They give money, like a gift, to help pay for building the houses.
However, only a small number of these houses are actually finished.
Many people are having trouble finishing their homes because the cost of materials like bricks and cement has gone up a lot.
The money the government gives is not enough anymore, so people have to spend their own savings.
Also, sometimes the money doesn't come on time, which makes building even harder.
People are worried if they will get their houses before the deadline, which is in a couple of years.
They hope the government will give more money to help them finish their dream homes.
In Vasai taluka's rural areas, 1,106 houses were approved under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) for the current financial year.
Only 189 out of the 1,106 approved houses have been completed, with 916 still under construction.
The PMAY scheme provides a subsidy of ₹1.20 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh per house, disbursed in installments.
Beneficiaries are facing difficulties due to rising construction material and labor costs, finding the subsidy insufficient and requiring additional personal funds.
There are also reports of delays in fund disbursement after house approval, compounding the challenges for beneficiaries aiming to complete their homes by the March 31, 2026 deadline.
