E20 Petrol: What India's Ethanol Blend Means for Your Car

E20 Petrol: What India's Ethanol Blend Means for Your Car

Imagine your petrol is a fruit punch: most of it is petrol, but one out of every five cups is now made from plants like sugarcane or maize, and that is what E20 means.

Since 1 April 2026, every ordinary petrol pump in India sells this mix.

The Indian government did this to use less oil from other countries and to help farmers who grow the crops used to make ethanol.

A little plant-based alcohol in fuel can also lower some kinds of air pollution.

Brazil has been selling this kind of fuel for almost 50 years, so people know it can work.

If your family's car was made in April 2023 or later, it is already built to run on E20.

Older cars might use a tiny bit more fuel, and some rubber parts could wear out a little faster.

That is why it is smart to check the fuel flap or the owner's manual before filling up.

The fuel costs about the same as normal petrol, not less, because making ethanol costs money too.
