Trump Escalates US-Canada Trade War With 50% Tariffs

Trump Escalates US-Canada Trade War With 50% Tariffs

The United States and Canada are having a serious disagreement about trade.

President Donald Trump said the United States will raise tariffs, which are taxes on imports, on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel.

The higher tariffs are planned to begin on January 1, 2027.

Trump says Canada charges too much on some American farm products and depends heavily on the U.S. market.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says the U.S. demands were unfair and would hurt Canada.

Canada plans to place matching tariffs on several American products beginning September 8.

These products include steel, dairy, appliances, farm equipment, paper and electronics.

Ontario’s premier also suggested Canada could limit some electricity and critical-mineral exports if the dispute worsens.
