UCC Debate Returns to Uttar Pradesh Ahead of Assembly Polls

UCC Debate Returns to Uttar Pradesh Ahead of Assembly Polls

The Uniform Civil Code, or UCC, would create common rules for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.

Home Minister Amit Shah said the law would be introduced in all BJP-led NDA states before the 2029 national election.

Uttarakhand already has a UCC, while some other states are awaiting presidential approval for their laws.

Uttar Pradesh is expected to hold its Assembly election in 2027.

It is not clear whether Uttar Pradesh will pass a law before that election.

The state government has not asked its Law Commission to prepare a draft.

The BJP supports the UCC as a promise about equal civil rights and gender equality.

Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav opposes the push and says the government should focus on jobs, prices and earlier promises.

BJP allies are also cautious because different communities have distinct customs.
