India's Food Warning Label Proposal Faces Regulatory Criticism

India's Food Warning Label Proposal Faces Regulatory Criticism

Food safety regulators are supposed to protect people from being misled by food companies.

One proposal would place warning labels on some foods.

However, a warning would appear only if a product is high in two or more nutrients of concern.

This means a sugary food that is low in fat might not receive a label.

The proposal also looks at added sugar instead of total sugar.

Critics say the first two phases are not properly supported in their current form.

They also say the proposal leaves out a food category definition already acknowledged in Parliament and included in the Draft Notification 2022.

The debate is about how to make food warnings effective and complete.
