Nagpur Civic Body Ordered to Fill Health Vacancies
The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission has told the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to fill over 1,000 empty jobs in its Health Department within seven months.
The Commission also made the city government pay ₹3 lakh as compensation.
This is because the city's health services are not working well due to too many empty jobs.
A doctor from Mumbai, Dr. Sumir Dembla, complained about this.
The Commission said that not having enough health workers is a big problem and violates people's rights to good healthcare.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation tried to say the complaint was not valid because the doctor is not from Nagpur, but the Commission said anyone can complain about human rights issues.
The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission ordered the Nagpur Municipal Corporation to fill over 1,000 vacant health department posts within seven months.
The Commission directed the NMC to pay ₹3 lakh as compensation for violating human rights by not providing adequate healthcare services.
The order was passed on a complaint by Dr. Sumir Dembla, a Mumbai-based doctor, who highlighted the severe impact of the vacancies on public healthcare.
The Commission rejected the NMC's objection that the complaint was not maintainable because the complainant was not a Nagpur resident.
The Commission observed that the prolonged shortage of healthcare staff had rendered the Health Department ineffective and compromised medical services.
