Pune Dog-Bite Cases Surge As Civic Stray-Dog Measures Struggle

Pune reported 24,803 dog-bite cases in the first seven months of 2026.

July had the most cases, with 4,887 people seeking help.

The city recorded 30,613 cases during all of 2025.

The Pune Municipal Corporation says even small scratches may be counted in the total.

Still, the numbers show that people and stray dogs are frequently coming into contact.

The PMC has set aside ₹37 crore for sterilisation, vaccination, shelters and dog-catching work.

Experts say these steps must be combined with tracking dogs that repeatedly act aggressively.

The city is also planning a new dog census and a microchipping programme.

People who are bitten can receive free anti-rabies treatment at municipal hospitals.
