Ahmedabad Pet Dog Registration Falls Short
The Ahmedabad city government wanted to register all pet dogs to keep track of them.
They started a big campaign over a year ago and even extended the deadline, but only about half of the estimated pet dogs have been registered.
The government thinks people aren't aware of the need to register their dogs.
They've tried advertising and setting up help desks, but many people, especially in the western parts of the city, haven't registered their pets.
The fee for registration has also gone up ten times, which might be another reason.
Only 19,029 pet dogs registered in Ahmedabad, about 50-55% of the estimated 30,000-35,000 pet dogs.
Registration deadline extended to March 31, 2026, with a 10-fold increase in registration fee to Rs 2,000.
Lack of awareness and willingness among pet owners, especially in western Ahmedabad, cited as reasons for low registration.
AMC has conducted extensive advertising campaigns and set up help desks at pet clinics for registration.
Private veterinary doctors have been involved in the registration process.
