Telangana Assembly Removes Two-Child Norm for Local Polls
The Telangana government has passed a new law that removes a rule which stopped people with more than two children from running in local elections.
This rule was made in 1994 to control the population, but now the government thinks the population is growing too slowly.
They want more children to be born so that the population stays healthy in the future.
The new law also makes it easier to hold local elections.
Additionally, some leaders in the government wanted to change the names of villages that they thought were not nice.
The government said they would look into these requests.
Some other leaders disagreed with the new law and said families should still plan their children carefully.
Telangana Assembly passed a bill to remove the two-child norm for local body elections.
The two-child norm was introduced in 1994 to control population growth.
Current fertility rate in rural Telangana is 1.7, below the replacement rate of 2.1.
The government aims to improve declining fertility rates and facilitate local body polls.
MLAs urged the government to change the names of some villages citing derogatory names.

Removal of Two-Child Norm
Government
The government argues that the current fertility rate of 1.7 in rural Telangana is below the replacement rate of 2.1, necessitating the removal of the two-child norm to encourage population growth and prevent an aging population.
Opposition (BJP and CPI)
The opposition parties (BJP and CPI) believe that removing the two-child norm is not appropriate at this time and advocate for self-restraint in family planning.
