MoSPI to release item weights in new CPI series
The Ministry of Statistics in India is going to tell everyone what things will be included in the new way they measure prices, called the Consumer Price Index (CPI), before they release the first inflation numbers.
This will help people who predict prices to do their job better.
The new CPI will have more items, like 364 instead of 299, and some old items like VCD and DVD rentals will be removed.
Food items will have less importance in the new CPI, which might make the price changes less up and down.
Before the final list, they will also tell everyone how they group these items using a special system called COICOP 2018.
MoSPI will release item weights for the new CPI series before the first inflation data in February 2026.
The new CPI series will include 364 items, up from 299 in the current series.
Obsolete items like VCD and DVD rentals will be removed from the CPI basket.
The weight of food items in the CPI basket is expected to decrease, reducing volatility in inflation rates.
The classification structure of items will be updated to COICOP 2018 before the item weights are disclosed.
