Punjab Power Shortage Triggers Long Industrial Electricity Cuts

Punjab Power Shortage Triggers Long Industrial Electricity Cuts

Punjab does not currently have enough electricity to meet demand.

Two units at private power plants stopped working, reducing supply by about 1,360 MW.

At the same time, very hot weather increased the need for electricity.

Punjab’s peak demand was much higher than during the same period last year.

Some factories are losing power for 8 to 10 hours each day.

Homes and farms in some areas are also facing shorter unscheduled cuts.

Officials say they are buying electricity where possible and expect restrictions to end when supply improves.

Industry representatives say one planned weekly closure would be less damaging than daily power cuts.
