T-Mobile CFO Dismisses Starlink Mobile Service As No Threat
T-Mobile is a company that provides wireless phone service.
Its CFO, Peter Osvaldik, said Starlink will not seriously challenge regular wireless networks.
Starlink is a satellite service connected to SpaceX.
Osvaldik said satellite signals may not pass through buildings, walls or some car windows.
He argued that adding more satellites cannot change these physical limits.
Elon Musk wants Starlink to offer mobile contracts directly to people in the United States.
SpaceX says antennas on homes and businesses could connect satellites to mobile phones.
The two sides therefore have different views about how useful Starlink mobile service will be.
T-Mobile CFO Peter Osvaldik said Starlink poses no competitive threat to traditional wireless carriers.
Osvaldik argued satellite signals can be blocked by buildings, walls and even Tesla windscreens.
He said Starlink cannot overcome the physical limitations of satellite-to-phone connectivity.
Elon Musk plans to expand Starlink into retail mobile contracts for United States consumers.
SpaceX says rooftop Starlink antennas could provide direct mobile connectivity to phones on the ground.
