Red Cross Evacuates DR Congo Soldiers from Rebel-Held Goma
Imagine a city taken over by a group of soldiers called M23.
Because of this, the Red Cross helped move over 1,300 soldiers and police who belonged to the government, along with their families, away from that city.
This was a long trip, over 2,000 kilometers, to the capital city.
The Red Cross had to talk to many groups to make this happen.
The airport in the city could not be used for the evacuation.
Some of the government soldiers went over to M23, or left the bases since the takeover.
The ICRC evacuated over 1,300 DR Congo soldiers and police from Goma.
Goma is controlled by the M23 armed group.
The operation involved long negotiations with MONUSCO, the government, and M23.
The evacuation was a 2,000-kilometer journey to Kinshasa.
M23 has refused to allow evacuations through Goma's airport.
