OpenAI Retires GPT-4o and Other Models
OpenAI is saying goodbye to some of its older models, like GPT-4o, on February 13.
Most people are already using the newer GPT-5.2 model, but some users liked GPT-4o for its friendly and creative style.
OpenAI listened to this feedback and made improvements in the new models, like adding different styles and tones.
They are also working on making ChatGPT better for adults and have added age prediction for younger users.
Even though some users might be sad to see GPT-4o go, OpenAI believes this change will help them focus on improving the models that most people use today.
Users can continue to use the older models until February 13, 2026, after which conversations will automatically switch to newer models like GPT-5.2.
OpenAI will retire GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini on February 13, 2024.
The retirement is part of a shift to focus on newer GPT-5 models, which offer improved personalization and creative capabilities.
GPT-4o, once a flagship model, is being phased out as only 0.1% of users still prefer it.
User feedback led to improvements in GPT-5.1 and GPT-5.2, including customizable styles and tones.
OpenAI is also working on enhancing ChatGPT for adult users and has rolled out age prediction for users under 18.
