India Proposes Solar Wafer Manufacturing Standards by June 2028
The Indian government wants to make sure solar panels are made in India from start to finish.
Right now, they plan to start checking the quality of solar wafers, which are used to make solar panels, by June 2028.
This will happen if India can make a lot of wafers.
The government wants companies to make both wafers and the parts that make the wafers to ensure they are made in India.
This is like making sure all the ingredients for a cake come from the same place!
They want to build a whole solar panel system within the country, so we don't need to depend on other countries for these materials.
MNRE proposed including solar wafers in the ALMM from June 1, 2028, dependent on sufficient manufacturing capacity.
The ALMM aims to ensure that projects use modules, cells, and wafers from approved manufacturers.
ALMM List-III for wafers will require at least three independent wafer manufacturing units with a combined capacity of 15 GW.
Wafer manufacturers must also have ingot manufacturing capacity matching their wafer capacity for ALMM listing.
The initiative aligns with the government's goal to establish a complete solar manufacturing value chain in India.
